About Hilary

Tackie's research is focused on teacher experience and expertise. She studies how educators incorporate curriculum mandates and prepare to engage students in meaningful lessons about race, racial injustice, and sociopolitical concepts. Overarching themes in Tackie's writings include teachers’ agency, discretion, and how teachers’ understanding of their own purpose and responsibilities shapes their practice. Tackie serves schools and educators through teacher professional development, education consulting, and curriculum development.

"(Dis)Connected: Establishing Social Presence and Intimacy in Teacher–Student Relationships During Emergency Remote Learning" AERA Open 8 (2022).

Explores how the COVID-19 school shutdowns and the transition to remote instruction challenges impacted teachers' relationships with their students. Identifies pedagogical techniques that allowed teacher to maintain and even improve their relationships with students.

"Through Our Eyes: Perspectives and Reflections from Black Teachers" (with Ashley Griffin), The Education Trust, November 2016.

A series of focus groups with black teachers across the United States shows that black teachers bring to their work many skills that often go far beyond their roles as content experts and instructors.
