For decades, our nation built international power by investing in our universities to become the center of the scientific and higher-education universe — the envy of the world. Einstein came to the U.S. because this was the place to be. We outcompeted our arch-rival, the Soviet Union. And by doing that, we showed the world what democracies could achieve.

And achieve we did, for one, by developing products and technologies that have saved countless lives. Warfarin, the blood thinner that prevents heart attacks, was developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It has prevented about 2.5 million deaths so far. Without university-based research, we don’t get those life-saving innovations.
